The Outpost

Fly Fishing

The 2.5 km of river is home to wild brown and rainbow trout. It varies in character from gravelly runs through boulder strewn riffles to deep pools and from open slow country to deep fast gorges. This creates a great variety of fishing and all within walking distance from the Lodge. The home pool is host to a number of wily old brown trout that have been caught and released once or twice over the years. The river fishing season in Australia is from the first weekend in October until the first weekend in June. “The Outpost” observes a catch and release policy.

Walking & Treks

There are a number of spectacular and scenic marked and unmarked bush walks around the property. Yaouk Peak looms directly behind us and the marked 1 1/2 hour walk (one way) from the saddle on the boundary of our property to the top, provides magnificent panoramic views of the valley and beyond to Mt Kosciuszko. Nearby Mount Morgan, Mount Scabby and Sentry Box hill are also good day walks for the enthusiast. Expect to see many native animals and birds; in particular, look out for nesting Lyre birds the majestic Wedge Tail Eagle soaring overhead.

Wildlife & Horse Riding

Spotting native animals including platypus, kangaroos, wallabies, echidna, wombats, possums, and many birds, rosellas, wild duck, wedge tail eagles, hawks, herons, finches and swallows among them. Play tennis or swim in the Platypus pool. In winter, a 40 minutes drive takes you to Selwyn Snowfields.

Horse riding through the mountains is famous and Cochran Horsetreks is not more than five minutes from the front gate.

Summer

Swimming in the clean, pure waters of the Murrumbidgee River is a real treat during the warm summer months. Swimming in the Olympic pool sized Platypus Pool with its very own Mermaid Rock, is an experience not to be missed.

Remember to bring your tennis racquet and balls.

Winter

Winter is a fantastic time at The Outpost. We get frequent snow falls and days are filled with bracing walks and enjoying tea and scones around a warm cosy fire. Mt Selwyn is our closest ski field and a 45 minute drive away. It is the most northerly of Australia’s ski resorts with a base elevation of 1,492 metres and a top elevation of 1,614 metres. That might sound high but it’s actually lower than Yaouk Peak (1,784 metres), which is adjacent to The Outpost (see Walks). The longest run at Selwyn Snowfields is the 800 metres Long Arm Run. The resort is perfect for small children and beginners. If you want more challenging skiing, we recommend Perisher or Thredbo, which are about 2 hours’ drive.

Come and enjoy a real winter experience at The Outpost.
